William A. Faubion, M.D., is a consultant in the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, where he also serves as dean for research. Dr. Faubion joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in 1999 and holds the academic rank of professor of immunology, medicine and pediatrics, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.

Dr. Faubion earned his B.A. from Dartmouth College and his M.D. from the University of Texas Health Science Center Medical School. He completed a residency in internal medicine/pediatrics at Texas Medical Center at the University of Texas and a fellowship in pediatric and adult gastroenterology at Mayo Clinic.

He also trained as a gastrointestinal fellow at the Center for Basic Research in Digestive Diseases at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Faubion served as a major in the 133rd Airlift Wing in the United States Air Force.

Dr. Faubion has a focused interest in pediatric and adult inflammatory bowel disease, and his research centers on examining how immune cells make “fate decisions” to become pro-inflammatory and cause the chronic intestinal inflammation of IBD. His extensive clinical research studies have evaluated the efficacy of novel therapeutics (including cell therapies) in adult and pediatric onset Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis as well as novel biomarkers predictive of active and complicated IBD. Funding for his projects has come from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the National Institute of Allergy and Immunology, the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, the Leona Helmsley Foundation, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Oberkotter Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and industry partners.

Throughout his career, Dr. Faubion has presented nationally and internationally on inflammatory bowel disease. His research findings have been published in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.

In recognition of his work, Dr. Faubion has received the J. Arnold Bargen Award, conferred by Mayo Clinic;

the Scholar Award, conferred by the Berry Family Foundation; and the REGAL Award in Continuing Education, conferred by the University of Kansas Medical Center.

In addition to his clinical and research activities, Dr. Faubion is active in education, providing mentorship to multiple predoctoral students, postdoctoral research fellows and other trainees. He holds full faculty privileges in Immunology at Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

Dr. Faubion holds memberships with prominent professional organizations, including the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America and the American Gastroenterology Association, where he is chair of the Research Policy Committee. He has served as a member of the Gastrointestinal Mucosal Pathobiology Study Section of the National Institutes of Health.
